Making Your Own Jewelry
Need a new hobby or a way to make extra money? How about making your own jewelry? So much of the population loves to accessorize and buying handmade is all the rage. Why not cash in on it? Now, maybe making your own jewelry sounds too complicated, but it doesn't have to be. The jewelry you make could be as simple as stringing some really interesting beads together and attaching them to some earring hoops. Maybe you know how to sew really well but aren't comfortable with materials like metal. Well, all jewelry, especially now-a-days doesn't need to be metal. It can be any number of materials. Point in case: fabric- if you can sew you may add the idea , make small, quilted necklace pendants or use fabric scraps and thread for long-dangling earrings. Get creative and find your niche. There will be a market for it somewhere. Much of today's market is focused on the "green" alternative and this spills over to jewelry as well. Find materials to "up-cycle" and create unique, one-of-a-kind jewelry items that will cost you next to nothing to make. Making your own jewelry is fun and allows you to really think outside the box. Who says all jewelry needs to be shiny gold or silver with some kind of precious stone set in the metal? Those kind of cookie-cutter styles are over. People want their individuality to shine and many find it easy to do with handmade accessories.
Think back to when you had multiple choice questions on tests in grade school. Many times if you got the wrong answer it was because you spent too much time over-thinking about the question. Jewelry is the same way. Don't over think it. There is no need to figure out how a specific ring is made, how a stone is set oil keeps them sticking , or how a chain is made. Yes, these are fun and interesting things to learn about as a jewelry designer you might be remaining over , but that will come all in good time. For now, go with what you know. Use materials that are readily available and get creative! Challenge yourself to make something beautiful with objects and materials that are not-so-beautiful.
